Procurement obstacles have evolved into a formidable challenge and often a nightmare, particularly with the current surge in material costs. Several factors have contributed to this substantial price hike. COVID-19 has disrupted logistics, particularly in import-dependent countries like Nigeria. Additionally, the Ukraine-Russia conflict has led to increased prices for materials such as steel and aluminium. Rising inflation, fuel subsidies, and Naira devaluation further exacerbate the situation. This has led to a 70% surge in building material prices, significantly impacting on construction profits.
Below are few tips on how procurement can navigate through the surge in price of building
materials:
1. Extensive supplier database: Compile a comprehensive list of suppliers or vendors who can quickly complete a purchase order in record time. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, this will help minimize the effect of price fluctuation from any supplier.
2. Forge a trustworthy relationship: Reliable relationship is very important and your biggest resource, create a strong and beneficial relationship with your supplier. When things or times get tough, these relationships could prove useful between paying premium price and landing a great deal.
3. Monitor market trend: Knowledge is power! Constantly survey the market, anticipate price increase, and modify procurement strategy appropriately to stay ahead of market curve.
4. Explore alternative materials: Take a creative approach and think outside the box. Explore
alternative building materials that will offer comparable quality at a competitive price.
5. Negotiate like a pro: Develop your negotiation skills and bargain like an expert, whether it’s leveraging on volume discount or negotiating payment terms. Don’t be afraid to flex your procurement muscles.
6. Make long term contract: Stability is the goal, long-term contract functions like insurance plan for your procurement approach. Consider locking in long-term contract with your supplier to secure favourable pricing and protect against price instability.
